So, what is BookTok anyway?
BookTok, short for Book TikTok, is a community on the social media app TikTok where readers create entertaining videos about the books, genres, authors, and characters they love (or hate). It's become one of the leading book recommendation platforms in the world.
It's every librarian's dream, basically.
These creators, lovingly referred to as BookTokers, have made titles go viral, impacting the publisher's projected book sales, and have even put out-of-print titles back on the bestsellers lists.
I wonder what it's like to have that kind of power?
Here are some titles that have trended on BookTok:
- The Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera - Was published in 2017 and was back on the bestseller list in 2020
- It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover - The author has become so popular she has her own hashtag, #CoHo
- The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood - Started out as Star Wars fan fiction
- The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake - Originally self-published before going viral
- Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon - Self-published and is now available in print
- We were Liars by E. Lockhart - Was published in 2014 and was back on the bestseller list in 2020
