Reading while farming
Clinton Monchuk, Executive Director of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan, is also a Saskatchewan grain farmer. His family farms on 4000 acres of land - roughly the playing area of 4000 American football fields!
He’s passionate about telling people about farming, so we’re thrilled he’ll be host and moderator for our upcoming Agricultural Week panel event, Food Innovation: Saskatchewan’s Sustainability Success.
We asked Clinton to guest-curate a reading list for farmers, by a farmer – and we bet you’ll be surprised at the variety.
“As a farmer I have many hours to spend collecting my thoughts in the various machines I drive throughout the year,” Clinton said. “I recently decided that during some of this time it would be great to learn – to widen my understanding on different subjects. Audio books are the perfect way to do that. These are my latest picks to listen to during seeding and harvest!”
- Be Where Your Feet Are by Scott O’Neil
- With all of the hustle of today’s lives, this book offers you some solid rationale on focusing on the now, where you’re at verses the worrying about the future.
- Tried as F*ck by Caroline Dooner
- This examines much of our work culture to the extreme in a humorous manner. Likely best to not listen around children!
- Control by Adam Rutherford
- A historical tale of how the Holocaust happened and why individuals or groups didn’t stop the process before it was too late. Specially speaking to eugenics and how this became distorted by the Third Reich.
- Happier Hour by Cassie Homes
- Some key points on how to live our lives in a more meaningful manner.
- Family Reins by Billy Busch
- The historical rise of the Busch family that has purchase our family’s malting barley for their Budweiser beer! An interesting take on the rise of a family business that eventually was pulled apart by greed.
- The Shortest History of Israel and Palestine by Michael Scott-Baumann
- Definitely in the news now, but I didn’t fully understand the history and context of the situation until listening to this audiobook. Interesting historical take.
- Relax by Timothy Caufield
- How does misinformation play a role in our day-to-day decisions? This is an excellent book to identify what science tells us, as opposed to what people tell us.
