Freedom to Read Week A
Step into the twilight zone with us, into a world where libraries ban every book that someone found objectionable. A world with no books left on our shelves. It's depressing, right?
Freedom to Read Week asks everyone to think about the realities of censorship and the importance of intellectual freedom. Every person in Canada has the right, within the limits of the law, to the full range of knowledge, imagination, ideas, and opinion, and to express their thoughts publicly.
Regina Public Library takes intellectual freedom seriously--one of our core values is to protect the freedom to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas. We believe in empowering everyone to make their own choices about what they read.
In recent years, libraries have faced unprecedented pressure to ban specific books, subjects, or topics from their shelves. At RPL, we stand by our commitment to support, defend, and promote intellectual freedom and privacy. By celebrating Freedom to Read Week, we ensure that everyone continues to have access to a variety of materials.
Visit any RPL branch in February to check out our banned and challenged book displays. Engage in related activities to win a book-themed tote bag. Enjoy a fun night our at our banned book trivia night.
This Freedom to Read Week, we challenge you to set a unique goal to read a banned or challenged book and enter our RPL Reading Challenge. Explore books by marginalized voices or more resources related to intellectual freedom.
Think about our freedoms as Canadians and defend your right to read what you want.
