Family Road Trips
My memories from childhood of family road trips are mostly made up of me fighting in the back seat with my sister, and complaining when my dad played the same Bruce Springsteen tape over and over again. At the time, I thought long car rides were awful, but I look back at them nostalgically, because it feels rare to have such uninterrupted time to be together as a family.
When I go on road trips now with my family, we are often engaged in our own solitary pursuits, aided by tablets or smartphones. Don’t get me wrong, solitary activity is great - I read many a good book in my formative years traveling from one place to the next. But this summer, I am going to make it my goal to share some time together when we go on a road trip.
Best of all, listening to stories in the car counts towards our Level Up! Summer Learning Contest.
My coworker, Heather, who you might remember from #RPLstories, is a big advocate for listening to audiobooks as a family. I reached out to her for a list of recommendations, and she came up with this list of Family Road Trip titles. The titles are available through Regina Public Library when you use the Libby app, or on physical compact disc, and I can’t wait to try some out.
Safe travels and happy reading to all the families going on adventures this summer!
