Respected journalist to speak about reconciliation and media at library

Join us to hear from Nelson Bird as he shares insights into how media representations of Indigenous people have changed throughout his career. He’ll also talk about the work he’s been doing to teach the next generation of journalists as part of his journey towards reconciliation.

“We’re honoured to offer this opportunity for our community to learn from Nelson’s experiences and think about how we can keep moving towards reconciliation,” Amber Christensen, Executive Director of Central Library said.

Bird spent 26 years at CTV Saskatchewan and is the longest serving host and producer of Indigenous Circle. He is now a lecturer with the First Nations University Indigenous Communications Arts (INCA) journalism program.

Bird’s talk will take place on the mezzanine at Central Library over the lunch hour. The event will honour those who were impacted by residential schools with an opening blessing from Elder May Desnomie, honour song, and a healing jingle dance.

People who attend Nelson Bird’s talk can also visit the Dunlop Art Gallery, where an exhibit of Indigenous artist Sonny Assu’s work is now on display until January 6.

Regina Public Library is committed to working together with Indigenous peoples as we take important steps forward on the pathway of collaboration, reconciliation, and change. Find more programs and events at reginalibrary.ca/NDTR.
