In this body of work, Colette Whiten marks a departure from her embroidered works by rendering her images in glass beads. These works use black and white newspaper photographs and text as their source. By using newspaper images as a source, Whiten questions how we experience the media in our day-to-day routines. Do we accept or reject what the media sends us? How far does it sway our thinking? How do we integrate this into our own experience? Prompted by news events such as the Paul Bernardo murder trial, Whiten articulates how reports of news events can operate as a kind of anaesthetic, positioning the viewer as a passive receiver of information. Seducing the Receiver challenges viewers to form their own personal impressions and constructions of meaning from the mass media's representations. Toured and presented with the financial assistance of The Canada Council for the Arts.
