Presenter bio
Kristy Derksen is a Dene and Métis artist from Treaty 10 territory. She grew up in Buffalo Narrows, where she was surrounded by lakes, forests, plants, and animals. Kristy has a love of nature and has been reconnecting to her culture through beading. She has been beading and creating pieces with traditionally harvested materials for over four years. Kristy is inspired by her late grandmother Esther’s Dene beading style as well as Métis style beadwork. She sees beading as one of the many ways of connecting with the community and has recently started her own business in hopes of sharing her knowledge of beading and sewing with the community and future generations.
