Vanderhaeghe, Margaret (1994)
Margaret Vanderhaeghe consciously brings narrative strategies adapted from film and literature to her practice as a painter. Her images also incorporate motifs from old world lore that was current in the predominantly German community of Leader, Saskatchewan where she grew up. Vanderhaeghe works in series. In How Shall We Know Them? she presents portrait "biographies" of nine characters. Like secular altarpieces, several of the paintings are presented as diptychs or triptychs. Fran Gallagher-Shuebrook's essay describes how the artist's mixing of cinematic, folk and painterly storytelling technique activates a variety of references for contemporary viewers.
