The Deaf Forest
Additional Information
Opening Reception: September 29, 7:00 pm
This exhibit was produced by Thom Collegiate’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in partnership with leaders Joanne Weber (teacher), Chrystene Ells and Berny Hi (artists), and the Deaf Crows Collective (community group). For the past 3 years, these partners have been working with the DHH students using art as culturally relevant pedagogy for deep cognitive learning, personal growth and solid community building. Through visual art and theatre, the DHH students have emerged as an expressive force with perspectives to share, stories to tell and ideas to develop.
The Deaf Forest is the first large-scale installation created by the DHH students. It is representative of their perspective as looking at three distinct communities – the Hearing world, the Hard-of-Hearing world and the Deaf world. Using various materials and mediums, this ambitious exhibit explores a powerful statement as a means to find understanding between these three distinct worlds.
