What is a portrait? The works in this exhibition stimulate the viewer to ask this question about the nature of portraiture and to expand their definitions. At one time, to create a portrait literally meant to portray, that is, to render from life a representation of an object, landscape or person. Today, it is used almost exclusively to describe paintings, sculptures or photographs which portray human likeness, particularly the face. Saskatchewan Portraits questions this assumption. Saskatchewan Portraits, challenges viewers to re-think the familiar.
