Additional Information

Dying For It (detail), 1995, Tass Mavrogordato

Both Tass Mavrogordato (England) and Ann Newdigate (Saskatoon) have, independently, created work which refers to the Bayeux, an 11th century embroidery of contested authorship located in England. Mavrogordato's work has consitently utilized comic-style and graffiti references as a visual vocabulary to illustrate contemporary social realities such as AIDS, urban decay, and famine. Newdigate is particularly concerned with the various interpretations that have been derived from the Bayeux, most of which support specific political agendas. Newdigate's work also draws attention to the unexpectedley lewd images in the margins of this historically significant embroidery. Information on the Bayeux tapestry is available through a link in the Site Seeing section of this website.
