NORMAL

Curated by Helen Marzolf
An exhibition of work by Regina artist Leesa Streifler

Additional Information

...the normal is not the same as the ordinary. The norm signifies nothing more or less than the prevailing standard. Mary Russo Leesa Streifler's altered photographs speak about women's preoccupation with their bodies as central to their identification. With an anxiety-ridden, self-consciousness, her women pose as contradictions between a desire to achieve the feminine and a defiance to perform as required. They are too extreme to convincingly take up any standard notion of femininity. In fact, their utter failure at normalcy tips them over the edge into the extraordinary. Streifler is an Associate Professor in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Regina. Presented with the financial assistance of the Saskatchewan Arts Board and The Canada Council for the Arts.
