Orest Semchishen: Byzantine Churches
Additional Information
For over twenty years, Alberta photographer Orest Semchishen has documented life on the Prairies. He has always been fascinated with the space of the prairies that extend around the rural parkland of his Edmonton home. A radiologist by profession, he spends his winters in Edmonton. However, most of his summers have taken him and his camera to small towns in southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba where he has steadily documented the people, architecture, and landscape. This exhibition consists of a selection of photographs of Byzantine churches by Semchishen, spanning the period 1975-94. These images, part of a larger body of work of representations of churches on the Prairies and Eastern Canada, have become valuable documents in time as these structures are quickly disappearing.
