Drawing the Line is an exhibition examining the orthodox definition of the "official war artist" and the artists associated with Saskatchewan who have served in this capacity. It is also an acknowledgement of the work of Saskatchewan artists who are not do designated, yet from time to time have responded to the theme of war in their work. The exhibition features the World War I drawings of Inglis Sheldon William's in the Regina Public Library Permanent Collections. Other artists include Campbell Tinning, Allan MacKay, Sarain Stump, Doris Wall Larson and Grant McConnell. Inglis Sheldon-Williams homesteaded with his family in Saskatchewan in the 19th Century, Campbell Tinning grew up in Saskatchewan, studied art in the United States and established himself in Montreal as an artist and illustrator prior to enlisting in the army in 1942. Allan MacKay, artist, art gallery director and curator, served as Director of Saskatoon's Mendel Art Gallery in the early 1980s. He was Official Artist for the Department of National Defense, charged with depicting the activities of Canadian forces operating from their base at Belet Huen in Somalia in 1993. As a contrast to the documentary pursuit of "official war art," this work reflects the issues left unsolved by the armed conflict itself.
