This panel discussion will present contributors to a recent multi-disciplinary anthology about pain and its relief. It also marks the premier launch of this new book, When Pain Strikes, (Burns, Busby, Sawchuk) from University of Minnesota Press. Participants include: Dr. Kim Sawchuk, Bill Burns, Dr. Charles Acland and Marie-Paule MacDonald. Dr. Kim Sawchuk is a writer, feminist activist and critic. Her work on the semiotics of pain began while working as a mole in a market research company. She is widely published and is an Associate Professor at Concordia University in Montréal. Bill Burns is an artist and writer whose work has been exhibited and published widely including exhibitions at the Stedlijk Museum, Amsterdam and 303 Gallery, New York. Dr. Charles Acland teaches media and cultural studies at the University of Calgary. His book Youth Murder Spectacle: The Cultural Politics of Youth in Crisis was published by Westview Press in 1995. Marie-Paule MacDonald studied urbanism in Paris. She practices architecture in Québec and teaches architectural design at University of Waterloo School of Architecture. Her text, Reach for Pain, forms the basis for a design proposal for a series of hypothetical design interventions in Midtown Manhattan.
