Saskadiaspora
Additional Information
Mary Longman Aski-piyesiwiskwew, Elkman Waiting for Love, 1999, mixed media.
This is the first in a series of exhibitions which will present the work of artists who have some connection to Saskatchewan, but have for one reason or another, left the province. Implicit in Saskadiaspora are questions of identity, community, economics and social history. The idea of provincial identity is perhaps excessively romantic, colonial, and relies on an impossible, continuous unity and narrative of progress. Saskadiaspora seeks to portray the diversity and dis-continuity that makes up a cultural community, which, particularly among young artists, is a dis-located and transitional reality. Mary Longman will present recent works in a variety of media. She is a member of the Gordon Band (Salteaux) located near Punnichy, Saskatchewan. She holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Art Education at the University of Victoria. She has shown her work across Canada, including most recently in Reservation X at the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa.
