Vancouver-based artist Jan Wade was born in Hamilton, Ontario and graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design. Her paintings, drawings, and cross icons and altars reflect a developing interest in New World African imagery, particularly the spirituality inherent in the images and her placement. Cultural origins are at the core of Wade's work through which she explores the history and spirituality of her ancestral African roots, evoking a rich, often painful history of a diasporic experience. This interest was intensified by trips to Cuba in 1993 and 1994.
