Additional Information

Lobsang Samten creates a sand painting

Wheel of Life Organized jointly by Dunlop Art Gallery, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Canada Tibet Committee, University of Regina (Departments of Anthropology, Religious Studies, Visual Arts), Regina Public Library Film Theatre, and Heliotrope Restaurant. The Venerable Lobsang Samten, a Tibetan Buddhist leader has been invited to create a Wheel of Life mandala, a visually spectacular configuration which represents the multi-faceted Tibetan cosmology. Created entirely of sand dyed in intense colours, the mandala signifies body, speech, mind, and at the centre, bliss. Lobsang Samten was born in Ribuce, Tibet (1953) and escaped to India when he was a boy. He was ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk at Namgyal Tantric University in 1967. Samten served as personal attendant to His Holiness The Dalai Lama from 1985 - 88. Since entering the lay life in 1995, Samten has been founder and spiritual Director of five Tibetan Buddhist Centers in the United States. More recently, Samten was advisor to Director Martin Scorsese during the creation of the film Kundun, which chronicled the life of the Dalai Lama.
