TILL

Artist residency that will result in an exhibition.

Additional Information

TILL (detail of working prototype) 2001 mixed media

Artist Colette Urban will develop TILL as the primary focus of a residency at the Sherwood Village Branch Gallery, May 6 to 26. TILL is a collaborative project involving the storyteller and the near-by communities. Community members will be invited to construct a sculptural object from packaged materials Urban will compile during the residency. Approximately two hundred assembled packages will consist of assorted odd and challenging recycled materials and craft supplies. The participants will have an extended period of time, from June to October, to develop objects for an exhibition at the Sherwood Village Branch Gallery in November 2001. The project TILL will culminate in a display of all the contributions that have been made by the various participants. Colette Urban is a visual artist who works with objects, drawings, lighting, costume, performance and text. She has an expansive and elastic imagination that has spawned such props as chocolate gophers (AKA in Saskatoon); a mobile table piled high with thousands of jigsaw puzzle pieces (Gambler at the Surrey Art Gallery); a record player that generates sounds via a pulley system as it is pushed by a performer (Orchestrina at the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery in 1989). Colette Urban's art has been shown across Canada. She is currently an Associate Professor with the Visual Arts Department at the University of Western Ontario.
