To Conjure brings together early 20th century spiritualist photographs and work by contemporary artists. The photographs (part of the T. Glendenning Hamilton collection, University of Manitoba) document Dr. Hamilton's investigations into mediumship, which he and his companions undertook with rigour and dedication between 1918 and 1945. Dr. Hamilton (1873-1935), who spent his youth homesteading in what is now Saskatoon, was a respected Winnipeg physician and Liberal member of the Manitoba Legislature. Like practitioners of 19th and 20th century spiritualism, the contemporary artists creatively (mis)use contemporary technology, scientific research methods, performance and indexical practices (media that have a direct physical relationship to their referent such as casting and photography). While spiritualists sought confirmation of paranormal phenomenon and the continuance of life after death, artists make palpable the workings of potent "invisible forces" of another kind-memory, ideology, desire and longing.
