Jeff Thomas: A Study of Indian-ness
Organized by Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography. January 22, 2005 to March 6, 2005, at Sherwood Gallery.
Additional Information
Frustrated in his search for archival testimonies of aboriginal experience, Jeff Thomas turned to historic studies produced by white photographer Edward Curtis and ethnographer Sir Francis Knowles as sources for discoursing with history. A Study of Indian-ness is based upon fictive conversations between the artist and these historic persons. Jeff Thomas is an Iroquis/Onondaga photographer and curator who now lives in Ottawa. For several decades his work has investigated how Native peoples are represented in an urban context, presenting the image of the Indian in constant flux and redefinition.
