Monika Napier: Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Additional Information
Other associated events: Opening Reception and Artist's Talk Friday, July 8, 7:00 pm
Monika Napier will be artist in residence at Dunlop from July 4 to July 10, when she will construct a new work at Central Gallery. You are invited to drop in to see her at work and to participate in the exhibition event by bringing along a small electrical appliance. Napier's current body of work, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, is a hyperbolized monument to excess, connectivity and over-consumption. Constructed with extension cords and plastic cable ties, these deceptively straightforward objects provoke interpretive entanglements. Napier's obsessively constructed installation, titled after Stanley Kramer's 1963 comedic road movie It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, exaggerates the maniacal intensity of North American patterns of consumption. Napier handles a broad range of media with astonishing technical skill. Her installations and objects are shaped by a carefully configured conceptual framework. The resulting imagery is exquisite, persnickety, and persists vividly in memory and imagination. The recipient of a BFA from Concordia University in 1988, Napier received a MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1998. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. Napier currently lives and works in Montreal.
