The mediated image defines contemporary language and sensibility. A static condition of a "medium" [such as photography or television] points to a failure of such a form in its capacity to re-produce and receive our circumstances as a quorum. The basis for this situation is the hegemony of a culture of the mise-en-scène, of spectacle, or of symbolic layers, which destabilizes values and leads to that which is anarchic, transitory and highly transferable. In a country such as Cuba this situation becomes even more complex. It is a context unequipped with a technological arsenal and less interested in the aesthetic exegesis than in the role and social scope of image construction. Luis Gómez, Lázaro Saavedra, Raúl Cordero, Ernesto Leal, Sandra Ramos, Glenda León, Alexandre Arrechea and Fernando Rodriguez are architects in a methodological expansion. Contact and mediation addresses the material "contact" presupposed in technology, as well as "mediations" produced as a form of perception by technology. The exhibition also transgresses the limits of the photographic, and overcomes those qualities that the "new media" originally inscribed. It points to the dislocation, contamination, and subversion of such models, and it experiments with the superpositioning and the embrication of signs and codes, thus contributing to the paradigms of aesthetics and communications in today's world. - Dannys Montes de Oca Moreda This exhibition is co-curated by Annette Hurtig and Dannys Montes de Oca Moreda
