In periods of political uncertainty, artists often use playful defiance to intervene in the social sphere. Similar to art, humour and wit brings to the surface what mass culture represses, filters out and distorts. Exploration of these issues offers a complicating perspective of the conditions, substance and character of late twentieth century global corporatization, consumerism and the search for new forms to confound gender and cultural identities within these contemporary circumstances. KC Adams (Winnipeg), Thirza Cuthand (Saskatoon), Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan (Winnipeg), Mary Kainer (Toronto), Bonnie Marin (Winnipeg), Adrian Stimson (Saskatoon), and Elizabeth Vander Zaag (Vancouver) are contemporary artists who consciously displace, transgress, exaggerate or go beyond established meanings to question dominant powers with the transformative force of comedic truth. The exhibition will be accompanied by Scentbar: Fragrances for Troubled Times, a performance by Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan. For over two decades, Dempsey and Millan have collaborated to create live performance, film, video, public art projects and print. Their highly acclaimed work has been exhibited nationally and internationally from the Istanbul Biennial to the Sydney Gay/ Lesbian Mardi Gras.
