21 includes the work of artists Cheryl L'Hirondelle (Vancouver), Divya Mehra (Winnipeg), Jayce Salloum (Vancouver), Camille Turner (Toronto) and Gabriel Yahyahkeekoot (Regina). Toward the end of the last millennium, Canada introduced policy surrounding multiculturalism as a way to define the populations not belonging to the country's two official charter groups. With our government initiating the official blueprint on how we interact with one another, many of us have fallen victim to the form of social engineering that is political correctness. By design, the artists participating in the exhibition come from aboriginal and other non-dominant cultures. All of the works are firmly rooted in the politics of representation. The works in this exhibition move beyond cultural representation and expectation, providing viewers with the opportunity to re-examine and reconfigure how we relate to one another. The artists have managed to maintain their candour, their sense of play, their inherent sense of justice and resistance. They have incorporated into their art various tactics to infiltrate the Western canon and to explore, question, and challenge the so-called authority that is controlling and maintaining the discourse.
