Marginalized women are often subject to continuing scrutiny. Rather than continuing this surveillance, PhotoVoice puts them behind the lens and allows us to see the world through their eyes. Thirteen Regina women from diverse backgrounds and social locations have been invited to participate in the project. A camera has been given to each participant and the group is in training with support to create their own photographs. The women are participating in discussions about their photographs and determining what messages they want to convey about living in poverty. The project will produce photographic images and text that will be useful in efforts to challenge negative stereotypes of people living in poverty, and to promote a critical reappraisal of public policies. The PhotoVoice project provides a unique perspective on poverty and the public policies that affect the income, economic security and social inclusion/exclusion of people living in poverty. PhotoVoice Regina will build on the success of similar projects in Winnipeg and Saskatoon.
