Familiar but Foreign calls attention to place experience as an essential understanding of the temporal and transitory state of the urban landscape. Artists have reflected on and imagined place for many years, particularly in the early twentieth century, through representations of the land. But what has replaced these images of the past as the current portrait of place experience? And how do these issues pertaining to the politicization of the land, lived experiences and new identities reflect our current zeitgeist? For the past few decades artists have been responding to these questions by reflecting on the meaning of place through historical references, personal narratives and lived experiences that compel the viewer to consider past colonial tensions, new identities and ideological constructs. Works drawn from the Regina Public Library collections include examples by Eleanor Bond, Jeannie Mah, Grant McConnell, Brenda Pelkey, Jane Ash Poitras, Edward Poitras, Patrick Traer, David Thauberger, Joyce Wieland, and Inglis Sheldon-Williams. Join us for a reading by author Michael Trussler on Sunday, February 10, 2:00 pm.
