Speaking Pictures: Open Spaces and Everything In-Between
Additional Information
Other associated events: Opening reception Saturday, October 4, 2:00 pm: Talks by Jeff Nye, the students of Winston Knoll Collegiate and their teacher, Danette Exner
The stories that are told about a work of visual art offer us multiple paths to consider. These paths meander between the world of the artwork and our own innermost thoughts. With any given work, we are free to engage with a variety of narratives: the story of the piece's creation, the biography of the maker, the description of the colours, textures, and forms that we discern as we regard the work or how the work resonates with our lives, our ideas, or our emotions at the moment of encounter.
Dunlop Art Gallery has invited students from Winston Knoll Collegiate's Grade 11 Art Class to curate this exhibition that will investigate these ideas utilizing the Regina Public Library's Permanent Collection. The collection houses important works representing the rich pool of artists who have worked and lived in Saskatchewan: Lorne Beug, Bob Boyer, Victor Cicansky, Joe Fafard, Dorothy Knowles, Ernest Lindner, Kenneth Lochhead, Wilf Perreault, Edward Poitras, and David Thauberger. With mentorship from Assistant Curator, Jeff Nye, each student will select a work for the exhibition. They will re-imagine their selection through personal experiences, and translate this into a spoken word piece, which will become a component of the exhibition. Speaking Pictures will offer visitors the opportunity to view work by some of the province's best loved artists and to hear what is being said by the next generation in the reflective space provided by the gallery.
