Vaughan Grayson: Adventures of an Artist in the Canadian Rockies

In contrast with the Althea Thauberger exhibition at Central, the Canadian landscape is examined in a different era and context in this exhibition on loan from the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery. Explore the Rockies through the eyes of Saskatchewan artist Vaughan Grayson. Grayson was an accomplished painter, drawer and printmaker. Her work is expressionistic in its use of line, colour and brushstroke. Living part of the year in the Okanagan and part of the year in Moose Jaw, Vaughan Grayson travelled and painted extensively in the mountains. This retrospective exhibition presents paintings, prints and drawings from Grayson's time in and around British Columbia and Alberta from the 1940s through the 1960s. Vaughan Grayson was born in 1895 into a prominent Moose Jaw family. Trained as a school teacher, she graduated in 1923 from Columbia University in New York. In the 1920's, she published two books about teaching art appreciation in school, which were widely used in Canada.
