Diabolique is an eclectic mix of dark scenes and narratives influenced by the impact of war, violence and human conflict. Part two of the exhibition includes works ranging from a ‘War Tourist’ video documentary, romance novel interventions, and a First Nations-like totem pole wrapped in torn camouflage material.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by Les Diaboliques (1954), a black-and-white French terror classic film directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. The title translates as ‘The Devils’. Diabolique is also the French word for ‘diabolic’ or ‘diabolical’: the works in the exhibition will be evocative of challenging, disturbing, puzzling, grotesque and surreal qualities.

There are 22 incredible international and Canadian artists in this exhibition, including Bogdan Achimescu, Matilda Aslizadeh, Rebecca Belmore, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Dana Claxton, Douglas Coupland, Mario Doucette, David Garneau, Fawad Khan, William Kentridge, Wanda Koop, Emanuel Licha, Dan Perjovschi, Michael Patterson-Carver, Raymond Pettibon, Nancy Spero, Althea Thauberger, Jason Thiry, Scott Waters, and Balint Zsako.

Diabolique will be accompanied by a film series in the fall.
