Queer City Cinema presents its annual Performatorium: Festival of Queer Performance, from January 22-24. Entitled Making It, Difficult, Performatorium 2015 features performances by Ron Athey, Jess Dobkin, Kris Grey, Homo Monstrous, Anya Liftig, and Martin O’Brien, and focuses on work that is challenging and difficult to perform and watch. The festival will address how art and performance can be cathartic, personal, controversial and demanding for its creators and audiences. As part of its Winter 2015 programming season, which focuses on feminist practices and gendered space, Dunlop Art Gallery is pleased to co-present the work of Jess Dobkin, who will be performing two works: Flowers, a short performance film re-imagining Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond’s hit duet “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” and Dirty Plotz, a transgressive performance of queer people, places and things.
Jess Dobkin’s work is presented at museums, galleries, theatres, universities and in public spaces internationally. Her performance challenge the status quo, transgress boundaries, and envision alternate realities, often using playful humour to establish a sense of comfort and safety for audiences so that they can broach challenging subject matter such as queer sexuality, sexual violence, and morality, together.
